The 3 Best Indoor Plants for Beginners

I remember buying my very first indoor house plant. He was a coffee plant that I picked up at a garden centre. I named him Bean.

Having never owned a plant before the stress I felt about keeping Bean alive was enormous. There were all these rules and restrictions about what he could and couldn’t be exposed to.

He needed bright light, but not direct sunlight.

The soil needed to stay moist, but not soaking wet.

Bean liked humid conditions, but not too hot or cold.

And for the love of god keep him away from draughts!

It was a lot. The funny thing is, coffee plants aren’t even considered difficult to take care of in the plant world. They’re actually classed as easy – and hardy – plants.

I do still have Bean (some of his leaves are a little crispy but he doesn’t seem to mind) but it put me off getting more indoor plants for a good while! I wish I’d started with something a bit easier.

Some easy, low maintenance plants.

Maybe a plant that could withstand erratic watering, uneven or bad light, and fluctuating temperatures?

INDOOR PLANTS FOR BEGINNERS

For all the plant novices out there. The beginners who want to ease themselves into plant care. The low maintenance guys who just want an easy life. Here’s three starter plants that are really easy to take care of.

AIR PLANTS

First of all, air plants don’t even require soil. How’s that for low maintenance? They don’t need direct sunlight (although a bit won’t kill them) and you only need to water every now and then. The great thing about air plants is that you’ll know when they’re thirsty by looking at them. If they start to brown, dunk them in water for an hour or so and then let them air dry.

SPIDER PLANTS

Spider plants are not picky about water, light, or temperature. They really ask nothing of you but give you so much in return. These beautiful sprawling plants are a joy to look at it and they’ll grow in pretty much anything. Over time they’ll grow into a truly impressive hanging display and you’ll be left wondering how it managed it!

SUCCULENTS & CACTI

I’ve seen succulents and cacti described as “plants that truly thrive on neglect” which is not only hilarious but actually true. Go away for a few days? Have fun – they’re fine! Forget to water them? They love a couple of days of dry soil! Don’t open the blinds for a few days? They don’t mind. Honestly, it’s so hard to kill them. Which is why they make really fantastic plants for terrariums too.
